Nikawa Pigment Coloured Japanese Wallpaper

Traditional Japanese painting uses pigment dissolved in nikawa water. Nikawa is a gelatin made from animal bones or skin and functions like glue. This paper is coloured by pigmentation and nikawa, so it has a variety of natural colours. Therefore, the colour of the actual paper comes out very well. Sometimes it has a modern feeling, and sometimes it has a traditional atmosphere. If we compare this paper to cloth, it may be likened to a dyed casual cotton.
Why We Love It & Styling
We love this wallcovering for its subtle colour, texture and natural depth. It adds character without pattern, allowing spaces to feel layered yet restrained.
The subtle evolving colour create a surface that responds gently to light, enriching a room over time rather than remaining static. It pairs beautifully with natural materials such as solid timber, stone, linen, and ceramics, complementing interiors that value texture, simplicity, and material honesty.
Rooted in centuries-old Japanese craft, this finish suits contemporary homes. It can be used across full rooms for a warm, enveloping effect, or as a feature wall to introduce depth and atmosphere without overwhelming the space. Particularly suited to bedrooms, dining rooms, entry halls, and refined kitchens or powder rooms.
